Pickleball Stirling is now officially a "Club" - How Does That Affect You?
29 Aug 2024 by Alan Hutchison
I am delighted to report that at our inaugural meeting on the 27th of August, Pickleball Stirling was formally constituted as a “Club”. The Club will operate as a non-profit organisation run by a management committee that consists of the following volunteers:-
Chairperson: Ken Moncrieff
Secretary: Babs Bell
Treasurer and Vice Chairperson: Alan Hutchison
Committee Members: James Kilgannon, David Simpson
Joyce Kent has offered to take on the role of Child Protection Officer and we will work with Joyce to get all the correct certifications in place so that we can formalise this position.
But what exactly does that mean and how does it affect you?
Well, first of all, it gives us a route to support and funding. As an official club, we can become an affiliate of ClubSport Stirling. This provides us with a 10% discount on our venue bookings at Stirling High. It also provides us with access to training courses for health and safety, and child protection. ClubSport Stirling can also provide support in terms of fundraising and equipment.
We can now officially become an affiliate club of Pickleball Scotland, the organisation that is aiming to become the governing body for Pickleball in Scotland. This provides us with free Club Insurance as part of our membership, as well as access to training and coaching qualifications.
As a Club we aim to provide you with a varied schedule of Pickleball events, access to free coaching, social events and more.
But…and there is always a but. We are aiming to invest in proper Pickleball nets for use at Stirling High and the Peak. We are also investing in proper paddles for beginners to use. Our group booking at Stirling High School comes with some financial risk as we need to ensure those costs are covered.
So we will be asking you for a small subscription of £30 per year to become a founding member of Pickleball Stirling.
Everyone at our inaugural meeting last night agreed that this was a fair membership fee for the benefits it provides.
When will I have to commit to becoming a member?
We would ask that everyone who wants to continue playing at Pickleball Stirling events becomes a member of the Club by no later than the 31st of October.
Does this mean I don’t need to become a member of the Allan Centre to play there?
If you wish to play at any of the Allan Centre events, you will have to become a member of the Allan Centre. This costs £50 per year or £25 for anyone 60 or over or in receipt of benefits. The Allan Centre will shortly be providing us with membership forms to distribute and this membership will need to be paid during September. Please note that the Allan Centre does not have a “pay per session” facility – you must become an Allan Centre member if you play there. You will be allowed one free session only, and thereafter if you continue to play at the Centre, you would need to become a member. Their membership year runs from September each year.
What if I don’t play at the Allan Centre, do I need to pay for their separate membership?
No. If you don’t play at any of the Allan Centre events which are currently held on Mondays and Tuesdays, you do not need to become a member of the Allan Centre.
What about the Peak?
If you wish to play at the Peak you need to either be a member of the Peak (£30 a month) or pay a non-Peak member session fee of £12 at reception.
What about sessions at Stirling High School?
For Stirling High, we have to charge a session fee to all members of £6 to cover the costs of the venue hire. This should be paid in advance of the session via the Stack Team App. Please note that this is non-refundable in the event of non-attendance. You can however transfer the session fee to another member if you are able to.
What happens if I don’t become a member?
After the 31st of October, you will lose the ability to book on to any Pickleball Stirling events.
What are the benefits of becoming a member of Pickleball Stirling?
Access to a varied schedule of members-only Pickleball events every week
Access to free coaching
Access to club competitions
Access to club social events
How do I become a member of Pickleball Stirling?
Within the Stack Team App, you should see an icon for “Membership Options” – click on this and you will see the option to purchase an annual membership.
The membership year will run from the 1st of September to the 31st of August each year. If someone joins part way through the year, there will be a pro-rata discount applied for each quarter (e.g. if they join from December they will pay 3/4’s of the fee).
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to myself or any of the committee members and we will answer those to the best of our ability.
We hope that we can rely on your continued support now that we are operating as a club. Please remember that none of these weekly Pickleball events that you attend happened by accident. It took a lot of hard work to get us to where we are, and we need your support to allow us to continue to do this.
Thank you!
Ken Moncrieff
Chairperson, Pickleball Stirling
